How to Reach Baijnath and Paprola — All Transport Options

One of the most common questions from travellers planning a trip to this corner of Himachal Pradesh is simply: how do I actually get there?

Baijnath and Paprola are well connected — far more so than many people expect — but the options are varied enough to cause confusion. This guide lays out every transport option clearly, with timings, approximate costs and honest advice on which route suits which kind of traveller.

The short answer: the toy train from Pathankot is the most scenic and memorable way to arrive. But depending on where you are coming from and what your priorities are, the road or bus might serve you better. Read on and decide for yourself.

Where Exactly Are Baijnath and Paprola?

Before diving into transport options, a quick orientation helps.

Baijnath and Paprola are two adjacent towns in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, sitting at the foot of the Dhauladhar mountain range. They are effectively twin towns — Paprola is the railway junction, and Baijnath, just 2 km away, is the temple town and main commercial centre.

The nearest major reference points:

  • Dharamsala / McLeod Ganj: 55 km (approx. 1.5 hours by road)
  • Palampur: 15 km (approx. 30 minutes)
  • Bir Billing: 14 km (approx. 30 minutes)
  • Pathankot: 145 km (approx. 3.5 hours by road)
  • Chandigarh: 240 km (approx. 5.5 hours by road)
  • Delhi: 520 km (approx. 10–11 hours by road)

Option 1 — By Toy Train (The Kangra Valley Railway)

This is the route that every traveller to this region should experience at least once.

The Kangra Valley Railway is a narrow gauge line running 164 km from Pathankot in Punjab to Jogindernagar in Mandi district, passing through some of the most spectacular valley scenery in the Himalayas. It crosses 971 bridges and passes through 2 tunnels, traversing rice fields, tea estates, river valleys and mountain towns with a gentle, unhurried dignity.

The train stops at Paprola station, which is the entry point for both Paprola and Baijnath. From the station, the Baijnath Temple is a 10-minute auto-rickshaw or taxi ride (approximately ₹50–80).

Journey Experience

The Pathankot to Paprola section takes approximately 5 hours. This is not a high-speed train — it is an experience. The pace is gentle, the views are extraordinary and the fellow passengers are typically a mix of local Himachalis, pilgrims headed to Baijnath and the occasional adventurous traveller who has done their research. There is a certain magic to arriving at a mountain town by narrow gauge railway that no bus or car journey can replicate.

Fare

Fares are very affordable — typically ₹50–100 for the full Pathankot to Paprola journey depending on the class. Check current fares on the IRCTC website.

Reaching Pathankot

Pathankot is well connected:

  • By Train: Pathankot Cantt station has direct trains from Delhi (6–8 hours), Amritsar (2 hours) and Chandigarh (4 hours)
  • By Bus: Regular HRTC and private buses from Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar
  • By Road: Pathankot is on NH44, easily accessible by car

Option 2 — By Bus (HRTC)

Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) runs a reliable network of buses connecting Baijnath and Paprola to major towns across Himachal Pradesh and beyond.

Tips for Bus Travel

  • The Baijnath bus stand is centrally located and within walking distance of the temple
  • Buses from Dharamsala and Palampur are very frequent — you can essentially turn up and go
  • For longer routes from Delhi or Chandigarh, book HRTC Volvo buses in advance on the HRTC website (hrtchp.com) — they fill up on weekends and holidays
  • Local mini-buses and shared taxis also run frequently between Baijnath and neighbouring towns

Option 3 — By Road (Self Drive or Taxi)

The roads to Baijnath are good and the drive is genuinely scenic — particularly the approach through the Kangra Valley with the Dhauladhar peaks rising dramatically to the north.

Key Driving Routes

From Pathankot: Take NH44 to Nurpur, then NH503 via Jawali to Baijnath. Distance approximately 145 km. Drive time 3.5–4 hours. This is a straightforward and well maintained highway route.

From Chandigarh: Take NH21 via Una and Hamirpur, joining NH503 to Baijnath. Distance approximately 240 km. Drive time 5.5–6 hours. A comfortable full day drive, best started early morning.

From Dharamsala / McLeod Ganj: Take NH503 directly to Baijnath. Distance approximately 55 km. Drive time 1.5 hours. This is the most scenic drive of the lot — the road runs through the Kangra Valley with uninterrupted Dhauladhar views throughout.

From Delhi: The most common route is Delhi – Chandigarh – Una – Hamirpur – Baijnath via NH44 and NH503. Total distance approximately 520 km. Drive time 10–11 hours. Most people doing this route prefer an overnight bus or to break the journey in Chandigarh.

From Manali: Manali – Mandi – Jogindernagar – Baijnath via NH3 and NH503. Distance approximately 160 km. Drive time 4–5 hours. A spectacular mountain drive but with some sections of winding Himalayan road — not recommended in heavy monsoon rain.

Taxis

Taxis are readily available from all major towns:

  • From Dharamsala/McLeod Ganj to Baijnath: ₹1,000–1,400 one way
  • From Palampur to Baijnath: ₹300–400 one way
  • From Kangra town to Baijnath: ₹800–1,000 one way
  • Shared taxis are available from Palampur and Dharamsala at significantly lower rates

Parking

Parking is available near the Baijnath Temple complex. The town is small and walkable once you park.

Option 4 — By Air + Onward Connection

The nearest airport is Gaggal Airport (Kangra Airport), approximately 45 km from Baijnath.

Gaggal has flights connecting to Delhi (approximately 1 hour) operated by IndiGo and Air India. Flight frequency is limited — typically 1–2 flights per day — so check availability and book early.

From Gaggal Airport to Baijnath:

  • By Taxi: Approximately ₹1,200–1,500, journey time 1.5 hours
  • By Bus: Take a bus to Dharamsala and change for a Baijnath-bound bus

The next nearest airport is Pathankot Airport, which has limited scheduled services and is primarily used for charter and military flights.

Chandigarh Airport is a more reliable option for those flying in — it has far better connectivity to major Indian cities and is approximately 6 hours from Baijnath by road.

Getting Around Once You Arrive

Auto-rickshaws are the most common way to get between Paprola station and Baijnath town (₹40–80 for the 2 km journey).

Local buses run frequently between Baijnath and Paprola, Palampur and surrounding villages (₹10–30).

Taxis are available near the bus stand and temple for day trips to Bir Billing, Palampur or Dharamsala.

Walking — The Baijnath temple complex, local market and riverside are all easily walkable from the town centre. It is a small, pleasant town to explore on foot.

Suggested Arrival Strategies

If you are coming from Delhi: Take the overnight Volvo bus from Delhi ISBT Kashmiri Gate to Baijnath directly. You arrive in the morning, check in, freshen up and the Baijnath temple is immediately walkable. This is the most efficient route.

If you are coming from Chandigarh: Take an early morning bus or self-drive. Arrive by afternoon, giving you the full evening for the temple, riverside and local market. The evening aarti at sunset is a beautiful introduction to Baijnath.

If you are coming from Dharamsala / McLeod Ganj: Take the local bus or a taxi. The road journey is under 2 hours and gives you a completely different side of the Kangra Valley. Many travellers use Dharamsala as their base and visit Baijnath and Paprola as a day trip — but those who stay overnight consistently say they wished they had stayed longer.

If you want the full experience: Take the toy train from Pathankot. It requires an extra step in your journey planning but the arrival by narrow gauge railway at Paprola — stepping off the train into the mountain air with the Dhauladhar peaks visible above the station — is the kind of travel memory that stays with you for years.

Practical Notes

  • Mobile connectivity: All major networks (Jio, Airtel, BSNL) have coverage in Baijnath and Paprola town. Coverage can be patchy on some mountain roads approaching the area.
  • ATMs: Available in Baijnath town. Carry some cash as smaller dhabas and local shops may not accept cards.
  • Road conditions in monsoon: The main highway routes are generally reliable year-round. Some smaller mountain roads in the area can be affected by landslides during heavy monsoon rain (July–August). Check road conditions locally if travelling during this period.
  • Fuel: Petrol pumps are available in Baijnath town.
